Luke 10,38-42

Lucas-10,38-42

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 10,38-42.

Jesus entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him.
She had a sister named Mary who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak.
Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.”
The Lord said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.
There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.”

Peace to all my brothers and sisters listening in today

Distractions, better part, being

  1. Distractions. What prevents me from praying? What urgent business pulls me away from just being present to Jesus today. Martha is anxious and worried about many things. We like her can allow the busyness of life, the external distractions of the day to deafen us from listening to Gods voice within.
At our Franciscan sanctuary in Greccio there is a sign that reads if the heart does not pray the tongue labors in vain reminding us that while we can mumble words and even go through the motions, our hearts and minds can be far away And therefore closed to hearing and receiving and thus encountering Jesus.
  2. Better part -While Martha may have opened her home to Jesus, Mary opens her heart. Mary allows God into her very being by choosing to be attentive and thus interiorizes His word. You see Jesus doesn’t want just a part of us, that is so much of our money or so much of our time or so much of our sacrifices. Jesus really wants ALL of us. -that is He wants our WHOLE heart. Only in this way can we receive all the graces flowing from His loving presence so that He might fill our hearts with His unconditional love. We think we are in need so many things but in fact our needs are usually only our wants. Jesus affirms that Mary is doing exactly the one thing needed- She is sitting at the feet of the master and listening -being receptive to His Word of life which alone can heal, and nourish and recreate the soul.
  3. Being- Someone once pointed out the obvious truth that we are human beings not human doings. We often think we have to do so many things and be productive and useful when in reality we need most of all to learn how to just be…..to open our hearts and receive. This removes our ego from the picture and instead of relying on our effort or strength to try and make ourselves good enough and so try to earn or merit heaven, we instead simply come humbly before our Lord and allow Him to teach and transform us. Instead of trying to find time to squeeze Jesus into our life we need to be reminded that we are freely invited to be fully part of His.

May God bless you and the name of the father the son and the Holy Spirit

Always remember Heaven is our goal
