Luke 12,32-48

by Fr. Michael Della Penna
Luke 12, 32-48

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 12,32-48.

Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom.
Sell your belongings and give alms. Provide money bags for yourselves that do not wear out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven that no thief can reach nor moth destroy.
For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.
Gird your loins and light your lamps
and be like servants who await their master’s return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks.
Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival. Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them.
And should he come in the second or third watch and find them prepared in this way, blessed are those servants.”
Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour when the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.
You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.”
Then Peter said, “Lord, is this parable meant for us or for everyone?”
And the Lord replied, “Who, then, is the faithful and prudent steward whom the master will put in charge of his servants to distribute (the) food allowance at the proper time?
Blessed is that servant whom his master on arrival finds doing so.
Truly, I say to you, he will put him in charge of all his property.
But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, to eat and drink and get drunk,
then that servant’s master will come on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour and will punish him severely and assign him a place with the unfaithful.
That servant who knew his master’s will but did not make preparations nor act in accord with his will shall be beaten severely;
and the servant who was ignorant of his master’s will but acted in a way deserving of a severe beating shall be beaten only lightly. Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.”

A Gift, to be given and accounted for

Peace to all my brothers and sisters listening in today

1. The Gift-Did you hear what Gospel says today? That it is the Fathers pleasure- that he not only desires but actually takes pleasure and so joy in giving us everything, but especially in giving us the kingdom-that is the rule of divine love in our hearts. Our Father freely offers each of us this precious treasure of the kingdom of heaven. How? Through the sacrifice of His Son Jesus who has opened the treasures of heaven to us by offering His own life and now invites each of us to participate in that infinite gift of divine love in the Trinity. Like any gift, however, it must be received and opened in order to be used, to work, that is to be activated. It is as if we each have been given the winning lottery ticket but do not go to claim the winnings and so we forfeit the prize. God has poured His precious love into each of our hearts but not all accept this divine gift or bother to use it.

2. To be Given away. The gift of love that God freely gives is meant to be given away freely. There is a famous song called Love isn’t love until it’s given away. The lyrics remind us-A Smile’s not a smile until it wrinkles your face. A Bell’s not a bell without ringing. A song’s not a song without singing. The love in your heart Wasn’t put there to stay. You might think love is a treasure to keep, a Feeling to cherish and hold. But love is a treasure for people to share. You keep it by letting it go, because love can’t survive when it’s hidden inside. And love was meant to be shared.

3. Accounting There is a catch-Jesus warns us- “Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.” This gift of love cost Jesus His life so we have an obligation, a responsibility, a requirement that forms our mission to share it. Jesus instructs us to sell all we have in order to receive this great gift and to share it through merciful acts of kindness, giving alms and helping others, especially the poor. In this way, Jesus promises that we will store up treasure in heaven. This sacrifice of our earthly treasure not only assures a heavenly reward, but a new life here on earth as this love atones and redeems. If we try to keep it for ourselves, we will waste it and will be held accountable when Jesus returns. He promises however those who spread His rule of love will be elevated and receive an eternal reward, while those who fail to love, will suffer the consequences of a loveless life not only here on earth but for all eternity. Let us therefore be reminded of the great and precious gift of divine love which cost Jesus the ultimate price and choose today to give it away freely so that we may have treasure in heaven-because love isnt love untill we give it away.

MAY God bless you in the name of the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen

Always remember Heaven is our goal.
