Luke 12,49-53

by Fr. Michael Della Penna
Luke 12, 49-53

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 12,49-53.

Jesus said to his disciples: “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!
There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished!
Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.
From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three;
a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter against her mother, a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”

THE DEMANDING FIRE OF GOD’S INFINITE LOVE

Peace to all my brothers and sisters listening in today!

1) HOLY FIRE
Jesus’ deepest desire is for us to possess His Love in our hearts.
The burning intensity of the love that Jesus has for us is like the explosive fire at the core of our sun in the center of the solar system, which constantly sends out unfailing light and heat and thus gives life to everything on our planet. Why does Jesus want us to have this love? His love is capable of purifying and even transforming our hearts. How? It burns away the dross; that is, all that is in us that is not of God. His powerful holy love is a roaring blaze that cleanses and purges all our sin and selfishness. In this way it welds our hearts to God’s heart, if you will, melting them together and so merging them into one. Jesus passionately desires to completely fill our hearts with this holy love that is the Holy Spirit, Love itself, as we see at Pentecost.

2) INFINITE
We must constantly be vigilant not to settle for a limited understanding of this infinite love of God and resist the temptation to domesticate or tame it, reducing it to mere sentimentality, as if His love is something which can be managed or even contained. Rather let us be ever-challenged anew to open ourselves deeper and deeper to experiencing the passion and overwhelming intensity of the reality of God‘s real love. As Saint Teresa of Liseaux noted, pursuing the depths of God’s love is an endless movement that is never finished, an eternal exodus, a pilgrimage that has no end. We are therefore always on the way, for in His infinite love, there is ever more.

3) DEMANDING
His love however is demanding. It calls us to make a decision, for or against it. This choice cannot only bring division among even our family members but has eternal consequences. God demands that we put God first in our life. His love wont tolerate any rivals. Why? When we love anything or anyone above God we are only serving an idol that eventually enslaves. God’s love therefore demands a primacy over all other loves, that He is dearer than all other relationships. Not that we don’t love others, but that we love God more, why? God loves us more- How much more- infinitely more. His is a higher love that demands us to a radical love that calls us to leave and drop our nets, to sell all we have in order to possess it- Why? because Gods love alone transforms, redeems, saves, delivers, heals, and resurrects.
it is that precious and worth it.

May God bless you in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit
