Luke 19,1-10

by Fr. Michael Della Penna
Luke 19, 1-10

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 19,1-10.

At that time, Jesus came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town.
Now a man there named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man,
was seeking to see who Jesus was; but he could not see him because of the crowd, for he was short in stature.
So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus, who was about to pass that way.
When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house.”
And he came down quickly and received him with joy.
When they all saw this, they began to grumble, saying, “He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner.”
But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over.”
And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham.
For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost.”

Peace to all my brothers and sisters listening in today

Overlooked. Looking over. Today

1.Overlooked. Have you ever felt lost, like you don’t belong? Have you ever been left out of a group or just felt overlooked by the crowd? Today a little man named Zacchaeus teaches us a big lesson about discipleship. He too probably felt he didn’t measure up with others, and was always being pushed aside. You see Zacchaeus was a tax collector and therefore considered a traitor by his own people and so judged as an outcast.

2.Looking over. Although he was small, his hope was big and his faith was even bigger. He heard that Jesus was going to pass through his town and he decided he was going to do whatever it took in order to see who Jesus was. Instead of being overlooked as usual, he would rise above and look over the crowd and so climbed a tree in order not to miss Jesus. In this radical move, Zacchaeus teaches how Jesus rewards those who go out on a limb, figuratively and literally in order to see Him.

3.Today. The word “today” is conspicuously mentioned twice in order to emphasize that today is the day, the time is now, if we want to meet Jesus, who is passing by. What will you do today in order not to miss Him? How radical will your effort be? What is the limb you would go out on? What are you willing to risk giving up in order to see Him? Half of your wages? Would you be willing to pay four times as much as you ever cheated, so that salvation may come to your home? Today Jesus is passing by, what will you do in order to see Him?

May God bless you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
