My Lord and my God, I firmly believe that you are here, that you see me, that you hear me.  I adore you with profound reverence, I beg your pardon for my sins, and the grace to make this time or prayer fruitful. My Immaculate Mother, St. Joseph, my Father and Lord, my guardian angel intercede for me.

Corpus Christi

Lord our hearts are overflowing with joy this day, as we celebrate this magnificent feast of Corpus Christi, of your body, blood, soul and divinity. And even Lord, if it’s been a long time since many of us have had the opportunity to receive you in Holy Communion, this magnificent feast gives us the opportunity just to say thank you, thank you for what you have given to us, your body, blood, soul and divinity as food for the journey to eternal life.  And we praise you Jesus on this day, whether we can see you, really, truly present in the tabernacle, or whether we have to unite our hearts to you, because we are still far away.  We want to take this time of Prayer, on this special day, to give you thanks for the Eucharist, we hear those words spoken by the priest at Mass over the bread and the wine, which becomes your body and blood, “take this all of you, and eat of it, take this all of you and drink from it.” You have given us your body and blood, that we might be nourished for our journey to eternal life, and that moves our hearts towards adoration, we marvel how gracious you are to us Lord, and you give your body and blood to us, despite the fact that we are not worthy, in order that we will come closer to you.

In Moscow with a priest

A few years ago, I was in Moscow, and I met up with a priest who had worked there for some time, he told me that he was bringing Holy Communion that day to a lady who lived in the outskirts, and if I would like to come with him, I was happy to get out of the city for a little bit, and see what Moscow was like.  So, he phoned ahead to the lady, and asked if it was okay if he brought another priest along with him on that day, well she was only too delighted, because that was the day that she was able to receive Holy Communion, that was the first joy, having a visitor, well, that was just something extra.  As we made our way out, the priest told me that the lady always liked to celebrate the chance that she had to receive Holy Communion, and she prepared a little snack afterwards.  She greeted us so warmly whenever we entered her little apartment, and she said the prayers so reverently, and so devoutly, because she wasn’t able to receive you with the frequency that she wanted, but this was a special moment Lord, when you came to be with her, in her own home.  And after she said her prayers, she took us into the little kitchen that had joined her sitting-room.

I couldn’t believe it, the little snack was a feast, she really wanted to celebrate this day, that she was able to receive you in holy communion, and there was barely any space at the table for the three of us to sit down; there were so many things that she had obviously spent ages preparing, and I noticed on the balcony, just beyond the table, that there were little herbs and vegetables growing, and so many of the things that she had produced had come from her own garden.  Well, my stomach isn’t maybe used to Russian cuisine, though, I’m sure it is very nice, and my first thought was, how the heck am I going to be able to eat this? and as an ever gracious host, she kept piling my plate with more food, and I was thinking, -oh how am I gonna manage this one? how am I gonna manage this one? I didn’t have the Russian to say, “oh it’s okay, thank you I’m full,” I just had to say, “thank you, thank you,” to which she kept piling more food onto my plate.  What incredible generosity that woman had, I noticed then, that she was not really eating much herself, she did not want to eat anything because for her, she had received Jesus, and that was enough, but she wanted to celebrate in the company of others.  And despite the fact that, I maybe struggled a little bit to eat the food, what really stays with me, it’s the extreme generosity of that woman in providing for us, that we might be satisfied, and the joy that she had, and wanting to celebrate the fact, that she had received you in Holy Communion.

Holy Communion

I often Lord, we go to Holy Communion, without really giving thanks, or often we just take it for granted, or maybe not so much at this time, whenever we have not had the opportunity to receive you in communion, isn’t it making us so much more grateful for what we can receive, when we can receive it.  Now, that little meal that we had in Moscow, in a sense reminds me, a little bit, of the Last Supper.  We have access to the Eucharist, through a meal, a meal which is provided for, a meal which is given with great joy.  But the mass is not merely a meal, it is also the sacrifice of the cross, when Christ offered his body, blood, soul and divinity, upon the word of the Cross, as a sacrifice to take away all of our sins, and so he offered the bread, and the wine on the night before, as a sacrifice for all of our sins, that we might receive him in the Eucharist, and receive the gift of eternal life.  This feast of Corpus Christi recognizes what we celebrate in the Holy Mass, and it combines with it, these elements of worship and adoration, and history of it comes from Belgium, whenever a saint, Saint Juliana, requested from her bishop, that there should be a feast, celebrating the Most Holy Eucharist.  She noticed that, in all the wonderful saints, and feast days that we celebrated throughout the year, there was not a day set aside to just give thanks for the Eucharist.

And so, she earnestly set about convincing the bishop, and those in authority, in order to establish this as a feast, as a day when we would stop and pause and celebrate.  Now, maybe it’s appropriate after all this time in Loctite, that we have Corpus Christi this year, and even if we can’t receive you in Holy Communion Lord, it gives us the opportunity to focus on what Saint Juliana had in her heart, to thank you for the Eucharist, and to celebrate what we have as a gift for the whole church.  And in this time of lack of Holy Communion, we can also prepare for the next time, when we will receive you, but above all Lord, we want to worship you for what you have given to us, and we want to unite ourselves, really and truly with you, who are present in the tabernacle of every church, and longed for that moment, whenever we will be able to receive you again, conscious of the fact Lord that it is you, who are longing even more for us.  Maybe there is two little ways, in which we could prepare on this feast of Corpus Christi, to receive you Lord Jesus, in a more reverent, in a more joyful fashion.  Maybe we’ll think about the day of our first Holy Communion, when you first came in to our body Lord, maybe we might spend a little bit of time, giving thanks to you for that day, that’s the first day, maybe even taking out the photographs that we have, and just reminiscing with what joy we celebrated that First Holy Communion.  And the second practical thing we might do, is we might prepare to go to confession, we might take the time to make a good examination of conscience, to look at how we’ve been Lord without you, how much we need you, we see very quickly, how many sins creep into our lives, whenever we don’t have you as the rock on which we can take shelter, and by preparing to make a good confession, we could clean up our souls Lord, in order that we could receive you with renewed purity of heart.

Full of joy

We think of you Our Lady, on this feast of Corpus Christi, and you received the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus, in Nazareth, at the moment of the Annunciation.  Your heart was so full with, full of joy, the message of the angel, that you should become the mother of his son, and he became present within you, help us Mary, to always have that same joy, to receive Jesus your son, with the same reverence and devotion which you had, and we think at that moment, at the visitation, when Elizabeth and John the Baptist rejoiced in the presence of Jesus within you, may we always rejoice at the presence of Jesus, whether in the tabernacle of the church, or in our own hearts whenever we receive you in Holy Communion.  Let us rejoice Lord, that you come to be with us, we thank you for the Eucharist, and we pray O Lord, that you will transform us and renew us through it.

It´s the end

I give you thanks my God for the good resolutions, affections and inspirations you have communicated to me during this meditation, I ask your help to put them into effect, my Mother Immaculate, Saint Joseph, my father and Lord, my guardian angel intercede for me.
