Matthew 7,1-5

Matthew 7,1-5

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 7,1-5

Jesus said to his disciples: “Stop judging, that you may not be judged.
For as you judge, so will you be judged, and the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you.
Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own eye?
How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove that splinter from your eye,’ while the wooden beam is in your eye?
You hypocrite, remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother’s eye.”

It’s easier to destroy than to build

1) Judging. How much harm judgment does! There are people who lose long-lasting friendships because of reckless judgment. How much harm is done when you judge and forget about charity! Once, I experienced this in my own flesh; this feeling of being judged harshly. It was very hard…it was as if I had received a red card in a soccer match. Basically they threw me out !
But I cannot complain about this because sadly, I have done exactly the same thing to others. I had to ask God for forgiveness for this. But after awhile, one discovers that what is built over years can be destroyed in a minute with harsh judgement. If you judge others without charity, it can destroy them. That’s why, before judging someone, remember that the first thing to do is look at reality… look at the problem from all sides. Be as objective as possible, and then analyze the situation carefully. Judge objectively, without listening to gossip. Knowing that Christians should have the same feelings as Christ in order to be charitable – ask yourself what Jesus would do in your place. Finally, remember that if you have judged hastily and without charity, the consequences might be that you throw away everything you’ve built in that relationship. You can end up destroying your brother. So always remember that you must contribute positively to the lives of others, not destroy them. Before you speak, ask yourself if what you are about to say will be helpful or harmful.

2) Look at yourself. Before you judge, remember who you are and that you also make mistakes. No one is exempt from making mistakes. No one !
Perhaps, the only difference between you and your brother is that his sin is “public”, in the sense that everyone realizes what he’s done or said; or at least you are aware of it. And perhaps, on the other hand, your sin is worse, but “private”; no one knows about it yet. So, before you judge your brother, look at yourself, and recognize that you too make mistakes and that you are weak. There are no first-rate or second-rate Christians in the church. In the church, every baptized person is the son of God! Everyone is valuable.

3) Your brother. Jesus reminds us that this is the key to Christian life: watching over our brothers and sisters, to grow through our relationships with them. God puts people close to us to help us grow. Helping your brother, you help yourself… judging your brother, you condemn yourself.

God bless you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
