Matthew 14,13-21

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 14,13-21

When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns.
When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick.
When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said, “This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.”
(Jesus) said to them, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves.”
But they said to him, “Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.”
Then he said, “Bring them here to me,”
and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds.
They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over –twelve wicker baskets full.
Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children.

A moment of silence

1) Being alone. Today we live in a world of noise: TV programs, radio, traffic… It’s all noise, arguments, shouting… we even scream instead of talking. Today we disturb and distress one another; it’s a dictatorship of noise that leads you to always be “connected” – you even leave your mobile phone on during the night, “just in case”, you say. We are constantly paying attention to programs, to cell phones, to everything around us and we end up having no alone time to find ourselves. Shouldn’t we look for a moment to disconnect from all that… and connect to ourselves?

2) Silence. The power of silence is great and heals many inner wounds. It’s a mature attitude to know how to be alone. Find time to be alone. Inner and outer silence is what allows you to strengthen your heart and your vision of happiness – which is your ultimate goal. Jesus wants us to be happy!. Don’t allow the noise around you to distract you from what you seek, that is happiness. If Jesus looked for moments to be alone, you should do so too: look for a quiet time to be with God and with yourself.

3) Give them something to eat. You have the ability to give time, gifts, and to give yourself to others. It is not a matter of giving what you have, but rather, give up what Jesus asks you to give. You can help and soothe a brother or sister, but that requires that you first spend time with Jesus to know what Jesus asks of you. A priest must first study in the seminary and make a tiny flame grow into the great fire of the love of God, so that he can then give himself to others through Christ. A married couple must first get to know each other and then give themselves to each other, to their children and to society. You must first get to know Jesus, be near Him…spend time with Him… and then you can take Him to others. Don’t be afraid, seek silence and you will hear the soft noise of God.

God bless you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. And remember, Heaven is our goal!
