Luke 6 20-26

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 6,20-26

Raising his eyes toward his disciples Jesus said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours.
Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who are now weeping, for you will laugh.
Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man.
Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward will be great in heaven. For their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way.
But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.
But woe to you who are filled now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will grieve and weep.
Woe to you when all speak well of you, for their ancestors treated the false prophets in this way.”

Characteristics of the poor

1) Their wealth is God. The gospel talks about the “poor” in this sense: of a person who is “poor in spirit”. We are not talking about the poor in the economical sense. We refer to the people who have their trust in God and their wealth comes from knowing God is in control of their lives. God is the only one that can calm our life.

2) His poverty: The second characteristic of someone “poor in spirit” is that he has a clarity on his limits. It is acceptable to think about your weaknesses and limitations; you are not almighty, you need God and others. If you fail to recognize this, you will be empty in your heart and full of frustration because you refuse the help of others and of God. In any addiction, you must first admit that you are unable to handle it by yourself and seek the help of others in order to improve. Recognize your weaknesses the same way; you need help!

3) Peace: This is one of life´s objectives. Look for peace. Knowing that you need God in your life and completely trusting in Him is vital to finding peace. He will never leave you alone and He is your only wealth, He is our treasure. Do not be afraid to look for God and to walk by His side; I assure you that life alongside Him will never be disappointing. Do not be afraid and always keep searching for Him. God bless you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Remember, Heaven is our goal!
