Luke 12:49-53

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Jesus said to his disciples: “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!
There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished!
Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.
From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three;
a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter against her mother, a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”

God’s blaze

  1. Fire. If there is one thing that “hits home” with us Christians it’s the tendency to become lukewarm and indifferent. We start off wholeheartedly, with enthusiasm, but over time, and with the lack of immediate results, we start to grow cold, lose interest, or fall apart. This happens to us in connection with going to Mass; our prayer life, or even listening to these audio meditations. You may be fed you up with them and say: “I get these reflections from so many people and I’m tired of this priest from ‘Tucuman’!” Anyway… when you fall into being lukewarm, you lose that ardor that leads you to devote yourself to God and others, because you isolate yourself and even neglect yourself. In today’s Gospel we see that Jesus notices that the apostles are losing motivation at this point; that they are no longer putting all their energy into the announcement of Salvation. That’s why He asks for fire and that it be blazing. Today, let’s ask for a Church with all its fervor to go out and evangelize. We have to continue because Christ is alive and our God exists, so come on! Don’t feel down… Jesus is asking His Father to send his Holy Spirit to you, so that your spirit will light up and you can take God’s blaze to others. With the Holy Spirit, you can motivate others in their life. You’re a winner! You’re a giant! You have everything to be happy! You have a family, friends, gifts that God has given you. You have a beating heart and people who love you. You have to burn, because we need you!
  2. A baptism. Baptism is a turning point: there’s a before and an after. It is a life decision. You get distressed when you cannot make a decision or when you don’t know what option to choose, but you’re also troubled by so much anxiety and lack of results. I want to pass on to you a phrase that helped me at the hardest time of my life and which a person I love, very much, always repeats to me when I am about to fall again: “Something good is about to come!” Today I want to share this phrase that is uplifting for me, and it can help you too. When you feel anguish or pain or distress, just repeat: “Something good is about to come!”
  3. Division. We know that Christianity is a life choice. And more so in these times. We clearly see that opinions and positions are divided in many areas of life. Because from the beginning, Christianity was inserted into a culture and a society in which Christ was not present. Today Christ is not present in many cultures and in many societies, but we should remember what was said about early Christians: “they are in the world, but they do not belong to the world.” “They live on this earth, but they are citizens of heaven.” (From a letter to Diognetus, in case you’re interested in googling it and reading it). Anyway, religion should not be something that divides, but always shared with everyone; even with those who think differently. Let them see that you respect their way of life and their way of thinking, so that in turn, they too respect Christianity, your religion. Christians are witnesses of Christ, not hooligans of Christ.
    God bless you in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. And come on! Remember Heaven is our goal!
