When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together,
and one of them, a scholar of the law, tested him by asking,
“Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?”
He said to him, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.
This is the greatest and the first commandment.
The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”
Loving is at the core
1) Pharisee: They look for Jesus to join their party; to take their side; because He had left the Sadducees speechless.
We cannot do this. There are no sides here in Christianity, and we cannot say Jesus belongs to one side or the other. Don’t look for Jesus on one side. Jesus is neither conservative nor progressive. Jesus is God and He loves us all. If you seek Jesus, do it to achieve unity, so that you can grow in love with one another.
2) Testing God:
How often we test God!… and not only that, we look for Him to fulfill a whim that we have. When God answers you, He gives you the answer all at once. Reencounter God and do not seek to test Him. He knows you and you know Him. Don’t ask Him for what you want to see; ask Him to help you see and understand what He wants.
3) Love: God loves us. He is so fundamental that when He is crucified, there is a cross: made of a vertical stick and horizontal stick. This reminds us that our love for God prevails in order to love our neighbour. If your head and feet are vertically in line with God’s things, surely your hands will be outstretched horizontally; nailed to those of your brothers.
Seek to love God in order to love your brothers.
