Luke 19, 41-44

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

As Jesus drew near Jerusalem, he saw the city and wept over it,
saying, “If this day you only knew what makes for peace–but now it is hidden from your eyes.
For the days are coming upon you when your enemies will raise a palisade against you; they will encircle you and hem you in on all sides.
They will smash you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave one stone upon another within you because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”

Cry for the homeland

1) Cry: This is the attitude that Jesus has with his people and his land. I think of those who cry today for their homeland; for having to leave their homes and distance themselves from their families. People who have had to leave everything; who have lost everything trying to make it in their homeland. Today, there are still people who cry, missing their homeland because they see how their dreams and plans have been destroyed.

2) Bring peace: That is what we citizens are called to do: we have to commit ourselves to bring peace; to pass from mere inhabitants to responsible citizens. We can help bring peace to our country, God’s peace. Because, it is not only God doing things, we also have to prepare and work for peace. Think about our heroes, they gave their lives for their homeland and fought for our freedom. Their struggle brought peace to our countries. Today, what are you doing for your homeland?

3) Time: We must be aware that God continues to give us signs. God continues to bless our land and we do not see it. Your land is so beautiful and bountiful; you still have food that comes to your table because of it. Today God is visiting you in the harvests, in the poor, and in the generosity of the people. God is visiting you in your land, your community, and your heart. Let yourself be taken over by Him to build a peaceful country through Him.
God-bless you in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Remember, heaven is our goal.
