Mark 1, 29 – 39

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

On leaving the synagogue Jesus entered the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John.
Simon’s mother-in-law lay sick with a fever. They immediately told him about her.
He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up. Then the fever left her and she waited on them.
When it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons.
The whole town was gathered at the door.
He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons, not permitting them to speak because they knew him.
Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed.
Simon and those who were with him pursued him
and on finding him said, “Everyone is looking for you.”
He told them, “Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.”
So he went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee.

Search for Jesus

1) He left the synagogue: Prayer is the center of Jesus’s life; the most important axis on which everything turned. Always make time to pray! Go to a chapel and spend a while in silence and prayer. Find your space and your moment. There, is where you find your strength for everything that you have to face during the day; there, is your place and your moment to find answers to many of your questions. Silence is the key.

2) He took her by the hand: Jesus heals her, but He also makes the beautiful gesture to take her hand and lift her up. This means Christ never leaves you alone. He is always by your side and lifts you up. You know how? Through others… We do not want you to fall; we do not want you to spend your life in misery. Beyond what happens to you, we want to tell you that we are here to take your hand and lift you up. You are not alone. We will not let life’s fever make you see things that are not real. Today you have a lot to give and offer to this world. We help you, and lift you up. So get up and share yourself with the world.

3) He went to other places: A missionary’s attitude is to go looking for others. Today take on that missionary’s attitude; go visit the one who needs you; even if it’s just texting a little message asking him how he’s doing. Try sending a Gospel meditation to that person who you know is distant from God. Pray for that person who needs God. Come on, go out! Let’s not get stuck in places where we like to be. We have to go out!
God-bless you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Remember, heaven is our goal.
