Mark 2 23-28

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 2,23-28

As Jesus was passing through a field of grain on the sabbath, his disciples began to make a path while picking the heads of grain.
At this the Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?”
He said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and his companions were hungry?
How he went into the house of God when Abiathar was high priest and ate the bread of offering that only the priests could lawfully eat, and shared it with his companions?”
Then he said to them, “The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath.
That is why the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath.”

Charity is first

1) Difficult times: If you look at the history of the Church, there is a stage where laws prevail over charity. The stage of the XV-XVI centuries were difficult stages, but in the most difficult moments of the Church, great saints emerge. Indeed, we have San Felipe Neri, Don Bosco, San Vicente, etc. These saints who teach us that charity prevails… and that above all Jesus is still alive within the Church.

2) Norms: God reminds us that charity prevails in us, and norms go along with charity. Here I am, talking to you who are committed to the parish community; in the movement within our church family.

3) Compliant: A Christian who lives with rules but without charity is a stiff Christian. Compliant yes, but his life refers to “complying” and not loving. Compliant, like these Pharisees who dedicate themselves to fulfilling the laws and controlling others. They don’t worry if the people are hungry or not, they only worry that they comply with the laws.
That is why we have to re-see our Christian life and discern if I am becoming an achiever of Christian life, or a servant in the Christian life.
