Mark 3, 31-35

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.” “Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked. Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”

Fulfilling His will makes us family

1) His mother and brothers: Possibly, the beginning of this Gospel caught your attention. Yes, Mary is His mother, and it also makes reference to His brothers, it is referring to His first cousins, that is, His bloodline. It doesn’t say Mary and her children but rather Mary and Jesus’ brothers. They sent for him; today we must also send for Jesus because it is very easy to distance ourselves from Him. Return to Jesus, stay as close as possible because when you least realize it, you could have moved far away.

2) Those who fulfill His will: It leads us to see that in our lives there is a common thread; to discover and follow God’s will. It implies that with the freedom that God gives us, we take on the commitment that God proposes, and we make it our own. That is the place where we fully embrace Him and from where we take action.

3) Familiarity: How beautiful it is to know that the Church is family and that we are called to fulfill God’s will. It is knowing that God takes the best of us and makes it available to others and together build a better world.

God bless you and be with you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
And don’t forget: Heaven is our goal!
