Matthew 6, 24-34

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Matthew 6, 24-34

No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth. ‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you-you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, “What will we eat?” or “What will we drink?” or “What will we wear?” For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. ‘So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today.

Your Lord!

1) Austerity:
I want to propose the word “austerity ” to you today, because the word “poverty” has been used in an abusive way and is perceived badly. Being austere is knowing how to live with what you have, and also looking for the necessary elements to live well. Material things serve us in order to live, but the problem is when you live for material things… or to have more material things. When you are living worried about the material more than your family, or your health, or your own fullness, we are already in big trouble.

2) Freedom: Don’t let that suffocating structuralism take over you. Many find they live in a situation that leads you to live attached to a system that sucks you in; absorbs you, and no longer lets you be yourself. Today, ask Jesus to help you be authentic… and it is there, in truth, that you will discover which things are necessary to serve you in your life, and which are not.

3) Concern: Learn to trust; to surrender your life in the hands of God. Here is a helpful prayer that Charles de Foucauld said:
“Father,
I put myself in your hands;
Do with me what you want,
Whatever it is, I thank you.
I am ready for anything…
I accept everything,
as long as your will is fulfilled in me
and in all your creatures.
I don’t want more, Father.
I entrust my soul to you;
I give it to you with all my love,
because I love you
and I need to give myself to You; I
put myself in your hands,
without limitation, without measure,
with infinite confidence,
because You are my Father.”
May God-bless you and be with you in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. Remember, heaven is our goal !
