Luke 11, 47-54

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 11, 47-54

Jesus said: “Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your ancestors killed. So you are witnesses and approve of the deeds of your ancestors; for they killed them, and you build their tombs. Therefore also the Wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,’ so that this generation may be charged with the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be charged against this generation. Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge; you did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering.” When he went outside, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be very hostile toward him and to cross-examine him about many things, lying in wait for him, to catch him in something he might say.

Seek, change and grow

1) Seek. This refers to reviewing our soul and searching for what gives meaning to our life but do this with total honesty and without lying to ourselves. It involves searching for what leads us to fall into weaknesses that many times we blame on others. And what’s even more, often, to make a good impression, we’re capable of lying and slandering others. It’s time to stop blaming someone else and victimizing ourselves. It’s time to see how many brothers and sisters we have ‘buried’ in our lives; leaving them aside because they’ve tried to help us or have pointed out our mistakes.

2) Change is seeing and understanding that it is never too late to be a better person. Whoever wants to change, can do so. In your life you will find many prophets who appear to mark the way for you and also situations and occasions that reveal to you God’s will. Today you have the possibility to change your life and that of those around you.

3) Growing together without destroying one another or imposing our beliefs on others. We are a pilgrim Church: a Church that walks together towards God. We walk together and we have to be united. Growing entails giving confidence and trusting. Growing is opening up to others and letting them into our life. Growing demands that we accept our mistakes and take responsibility for them without looking to one side. Growing is contemplating the future without forgetting our present and accepting our past. Growing involves being united, being Christians who see the best in others, and trying to help one another. I dream of a united Church, in which there is no search for individual interests… The only interest we should have is to bring souls to Jesus. I invite you to dream that God makes your dreams come true. Let’s dream.

God bless you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. And don’t forget Heaven is our goal.
