John 2,13-22

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 2,13-22

The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money-changers seated at their tables. Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. He told those who were selling the doves, ‘Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father’s house a market-place!’ His disciples remembered that it was written, ‘Zeal for your house will consume me.’ The Jews then said to him, ‘What sign can you show us for doing this?’ Jesus answered them, ‘Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.’ The Jews then said, ‘This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?’ But he was speaking of the temple of his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

1) Salesmen. They were those who went to the temple to trade and not to pray. They didn’t go to meet God but to profit from other’s belief in God. Please do not try to do business with God. Don’t ask God for favors in return for attending Mass or praying. Do not make deals with God! When you try to use God for personal gain and do not get what you wished for, do not get mad at God! Please do not put God on Wall Street. Do not use Him like a financial institution to earn interest.

2) Respect what’s sacred. I invite you to honor and take care of our sacred places, respect them more than anything. I’m not saying you should cover your head to go to Mass or wear a coat and tie, but dress with the dignity the church deserves. I believe that, in recent times, we have disregarded the way we go to our sacred places. Be careful to focus and participate in mass. Avoid the use of the cell phone in the middle of the Mass and dress in a dignified manner.

3) Rebuild. God invites us to rebuild what has been lost so that the Church grows and becomes a greater influence in our world today.
You and I are the Church, and the Church needs our contributions. Not only financial help, but also our time and participation. What is your contribution to your Catholic Church?

God bless you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Always remember, Heaven is our goal!
