Mark 1, 40-45

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 1, 40-45

A leper came to him begging him, and kneeling he said to him, ‘If you choose, you can make me clean.’ Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, and said to him, ‘I do choose. Be made clean!’ Immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. After sternly warning him he sent him away at once, saying to him, ‘See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.’ But he went out and began to proclaim it freely, and to spread the word, so that Jesus could no longer go into a town openly, but stayed out in the country; and people came to him from every quarter.

The leper. Characteristics

1) He hurts himself. Yes, his skin is wounded and does not heal. The leper of this century is the person who revolves around his sin, also looking at his failures and mistakes. He does not accept what has happened to him and keeps looking for someone to blame. He hurts himself with his self-sufficiency but also with his self-demand. That is why today I propose looking at yourself and thinking whether you are not living in fullness or whether you’re living in this constant hurting yourself with your memories and with your deceptions and resentments.

2) Smell. This disease makes one transmit an unpleasant smell. The person becomes someone that repels people rather than attracting them, and many prefer to keep their distance. The lepers of the XXI century walk around with the bad smell of negativity, that negativity that makes it unbearable to be next to them. To make matters worse, like any bad smell, it penetrates you and makes you doubt or think negatively.

3) Isolation. For these reasons, people suffering from leprosy, whether physical or spiritual, withdraw from everything and everyone because they feel worthless and people make them feel unacceptable. They look at life from a negative viewpoint, from humiliation and misfortune. They cannot find themselves or anyone else, either. Jesus comes to heal you, but God asks first that you should really want to heal and desire Him to cure you. Be careful with the ‘leper syndrome’ because we can all have it. The beautiful thing is that there is a way out and the healing comes from Jesus.

May God bless you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Always remember, Heaven is our goal.
