Luke 10,1-12.17-20

by Fr. Michael Della Penna

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 10,1-12.17-20.

The Lord Jesus appointed seventy-two others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit.
He said to them, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.
Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves.
Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way.
Into whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this household.’
If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you.
Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from one house to another.
Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you,
cure the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God is at hand for you.'”
Whatever town you enter and they do not receive you, go out into the streets and say,
‘The dust of your town that clings to our feet, even that we shake off against you.’ Yet know this: the kingdom of God is at hand.
I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom on that day than for that town.
The seventy (-two) returned rejoicing, and said, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us because of your name.”
Jesus said, “I have observed Satan fall like lightning from the sky.
Behold, I have given you the power ‘to tread upon serpents’ and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you.
Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”

Instruments of His Peace

Peace to all my brothers and sisters listening in today

1) Super Abundant Harvest
God has an infinite harvest of overflowing Grace that can heal, redeem and save everyone.  The problem -there’s too few people willing to spread the Word and prepare them to receive this super abundant divine gift of grace.

2) Trusting sheep
Today Jesus is sending you out as “sheep among the wolves”- that is- into a hostile and unbelieving environment- a sick world in desperate need of the good news of His healing Love. Notice Jesus instructs his disciples first, to go out together that is two by two (there is strength in numbers and one can support the other) and secondly surprisingly to take nothing for their journey. Why? All we need is God.  We are called to rely not on our own strength but on God’s, who invites us today to trust and depend on His love alone which is enough.  It is precisely this radical trust itself which proclaims that the kingdom of God is near, that is, His rule love has come near.

3) Apostles of peace
How do we do that? -by announcing it’s first fruit –Godly Peace. This is the true peace the world can not give but comes from God alone. It is the tranquility of a soul that is at one with Him- a supernatural deep harmony that is the fruit of truly knowing and fully trusting our good Lord. In Spanish we might say Confianza -which means having a familial bond of trust and assurance between one other.

Today let us spread the plentiful harvest of Gods Healing Grace to a world hungry for love and in desperate need of God. Among these wolves let us be like St Francis trusting not on our own strength but on Gods grace alone in order to be

instrument of His peace:
where there is hatred, let us sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.

God bless you in the name of the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit amen
Always remember Heaven is our goal
