Mark 3, 31-35

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according Saint Mark 3, 31-35

The mother of Jesus and his brothers arrived at the house.
Standing outside, they sent word to Jesus and called him.
A crowd seated around him told him,
“Your mother and your brothers and your sisters
are outside asking for you.”
But he said to them in reply,
“Who are my mother and my brothers?”
And looking around at those seated in the circle he said,
“Here are my mother and my brothers.
For whoever does the will of God
is my brother and sister and mother.”

My family

1. Mother and brothers. Something I would like you to think about in this meditation is your family. Yes, surely there are strengths as well as weaknesses in your family. Maybe you and your family are a “block”, and you do everything together. Or perhaps you are like a scattered family, in which each one lives as best they can, and no member of the family knows what the other one is doing. In short, there is no such thing as a perfect family. But I think it is important for you to think: what are you doing for your family? What is the contribution you are making today? We are all quick to criticize the family, but what are you doing for it? Do you include your family in your projects?

2. The crowd. One of the things that happens to us quite often (not to Jesus) is that many things take us away from our family, such as the number of activities we do every day, or certain people or even certain relatives. Just think of the times you go and visit your mum, for example and you are more interested in your cell phone than in looking into her eyes, listening to what she is saying and talking to her. As Pope Francis says, we are sadly losing the culture of encounter and there are so many things that separate us from our family. Think about five things that keep you away from your family or that do not allow you to be with them.

3. Mary. This gospel is a compliment to his mother, his family, and the apostles, because they followed Jesus. Mary fulfilled God’s will. Let’s place our family in Mary’s hands, so that we may know how to care for and protect them. May she help us to be strong and smart, to be able to become aware of the things that are not good for us and our families. May she help us to put aside those things that keep us away from our family.

Remember that something good is on the way!

God bless you, be with you and protect you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
