John 20,19-31

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 20,19-31

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, «Peace be with you.»
When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
(Jesus) said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”
And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the holy Spirit.
Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”
Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came.
So the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”
Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.”
Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.”
Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”
Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of (his) disciples that are not written in this book.
But these are written that you may (come to) believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name.

Mercy

1) At dusk: Jesus also appears in your life at dusk, when night falls, when it begins to get dark. We may be in the evening of this quarantine because we are afraid of the night, because we do not see the future with clarity, because we simply do not know what will happen tomorrow. We know that at dusk there will not be much light. Today it might be that you are not ready to let go of everything. Your smile begins to fade because we are exhausted, we are tired. It is in that moment the risen Jesus wants to appear in you and give you that light that nature and what surrounds you cannot give you.

2) God is powerful: He demonstrates all his power, even the power to pardon sins. It is here that I want to stop and have you reflect. In your emotional relationships, the first mistake is to believe that the other has power over your life. That power of the other to complicate your life is the power that you give them. That is why today God reminds you that, by believing, you are free. Do not let yourself be taken by the conscience of toxic, negative or bad people. This may be strong, but I quote Sartre, “the paradoxical disease is stupidity, because it does not affect the sick but those who surround him.” It seems that an apostle, Thomas, was half toxic and negative … Therefore, if today you have to live with a negative and toxic person, do not give that person the power to control your life or take control of you. One way to distance yourself while you are living in this quarantine is to “never, ever, get into an argument with that person.”

3) Have life: an important thing is that the mistakes of the past are to be learned from. In life and in college there are two similarities and one difference. They are similar in that in both areas you learn, in both areas you pass tests. The difference is in the order. In college you learn first and then you take an exam. However, life puts you to the test so that you learn from it and if you don’t learn, life gives you the same test again … It will test you as many times as necessary until you learn the lesson. You have to be attentive to the mistakes of the past so as not to repeat them. Today look at your life in the future because God wants to fill you with his strength and spirit. Cheer up! Live and let go of resentment.

God bless you and be with you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. And always remember, Heaven is our goal!
