Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 17,11b-19
Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed, saying: “Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are.
When I was with them I protected them in your name that you gave me, and I guarded them, and none of them was lost except the son of destruction, in order that the scripture might be fulfilled.
But now I am coming to you. I speak this in the world so that they may share my joy completely.
I gave them your word, and the world hated them, because they do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world.
I do not ask that you take them out of the world but that you keep them from the evil one.
They do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world.
Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth.
As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world.
And I consecrate myself for them, so that they also may be consecrated in truth.”
Be one
1) He prayed: Jesus talks to his Father. I know that you have a hard time keeping the prayer going, and that it is difficult to maintain. Sure it takes time, but do not stop trying! When you pray, seek a dialogue rather than a monologue with God. Try to express to God what happens to you during your day; what you’ve lived; what you have faced. Talk about your anxiety, your pain, concerns, joys, and future plans… Everything! Praying is speaking with authenticity about what I am, what happens to me, and what I have in me.
2) One: Jesus asks us to unite. Jesus already knew that when He went to heaven, we were going to start at each other like cats and dogs. See for yourself that, still today, we criticize each other because one is from the group “so-and-so”, and the other is from the group “whatever” … but, in the end, we forget that we work for the same God. Poor Jesus, as they say: “When the second coming happens, I don’t know if He will find us united, but surely reunited !” How can this be ?! We have more meetings than political campaigns. We must make the effort to come together. You and I have to seek unity. How can we do this ?
3) Take care of them: Jesus asks that his Father take care of us. I think we need to take better care of each other and pray for each other. Have you noticed that in the “I confess” prayer we say: “I pray to you, my brothers and sisters to intercede for me, before the Lord, our God”? This means that every time we say this prayer, we are committing ourselves…promising that we are going to pray that those of us who attend this Mass, will not fall into sin, until next Sunday when we meet again in the Eucharist. Tremendous! Have you thought about that? To take care of ourselves More, and criticize others Less … equals COMMUNITY.
God-bless you in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. Remember heaven is our goal !
