Mark 6,34-44

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 6,34-44

When Jesus saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them,
for they were like sheep without a shepherd;
and he began to teach them many things.
By now it was already late and his disciples approached him and said,
“This is a deserted place and it is already very late.
Dismiss them so that they can go
to the surrounding farms and villages
and buy themselves something to eat.”
He said to them in reply,
“Give them some food yourselves.”
But they said to him,
“Are we to buy two hundred days’ wages worth of food
and give it to them to eat?”
He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?  Go and see.”
And when they had found out they said,
“Five loaves and two fish.”
So he gave orders to have them sit down in groups on the green grass.
The people took their places in rows by hundreds and by fifties.
Then, taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven,
he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples
to set before the people;
he also divided the two fish among them all.
They all ate and were satisfied.
And they picked up twelve wicker baskets full of fragments
and what was left of the fish.
Those who ate of the loaves were five thousand men.

Have mercy

1) Disembarking. This is how today’s Gospel begins. You also have to come down to reality, you can’t live up in the clouds forever. Stepping into reality also means looking at what is happening around you in your own life, in your society, in your neighborhood, in your home; you cannot be indifferent to what is around you. Doing this helps you to see yourself better. For example, many times you grumble because they serve yesterday’s leftovers for lunch, while there is someone near you who does not have anything to eat at all. Disembarking means stopping and taking the time to listen to those around you.

2) Teaching them. In his compassion, Jesus gives of Himself and takes the time to teach others because the Christian life is not a rite or privilege. Being a Christian is a way of life, it is a philosophy and a theology; there is a deeper meaning to life, and how you live it. Today, there are so many people that still are ignorant of Christianity. How many people do not know about creation, about what the soul means in Christianity or even the difference between ethics and morality? Today, you can teach your faith and grow in your faith. Do you already know what book you are going to read to learn more about your faith?

3) Distributed. Today, we must do the miracle of satiating hunger, I’m not saying that tomorrow you go out to the supermarket to do shopping. Today, there is hunger for true friendship, there is hunger for fidelity, and there is hunger for empathy. There is a need to feel listened to by someone who looks at you in the eyes and not at the cell phone screen. Today, Christians are called to satisfy all these hungers and needs.

God bless you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Always remember, Heaven is our Goal.
