Matthew 8, 23-27

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 8, 23-27

As Jesus got into a boat, his disciples followed him.
Suddenly a violent storm came up on the sea,
so that the boat was being swamped by waves;
but he was asleep.
They came and woke him, saying,
“Lord, save us!  We are perishing!”
He said to them, “Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?”
Then he got up, rebuked the winds and the sea,
and there was great calm.
The men were amazed and said, “What sort of man is this,
whom even the winds and the sea obey?”

Faith

1) A great storm. Life is marked by moments; some may be good and positive, and others are bad and full of obstacles. There are also moments that mark you, in which you hit rock bottom and the only way out is upwards. Everything is dark, and you are unable to see clearly. Fear and anguish usually overtake you because you are unsure where you should go or what you should do. You want to get out of the situation fast, to stop the pain. Have you been in a situation like this? Let us ponder why and how we moved on.

2) He was asleep. During hardships, we feel that God disappears from our lives, since we are not able to feel or see Him. We feel completely alone on the inside and the outside. We do not feel like praying or talking to God and we even get mad at Him. It is the silence of God that makes us desperate and leads us to get angry with Him and with ourselves. Please do not abandon yourself, or God.

3) Calm.  When we turn to God, He works and leads us to calmness. His power will reach us when we least expect it. And we will recognize that He is always with us, even though we do not feel Him. Ask Jesus to bring calm into your life, to help you to have that peace that you cannot reach without Him. May he appear in your life to give you the peace that only God can give you. Today, pray for faith and peace.

God bless you in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Remember, Heaven is our goal!
