Luke 12, 12-16

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 6,12-16

Now during those days he went out to the mountain to pray; and he spent the night in prayer to God. And when day came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, and James, and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Simon, who was called the Zealot, and Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

He spent the night in prayer

1) Prayer. See how important prayer is in Jesus’s life. Before deciding something, the first thing He does is talk to his Father. Today you and I have to follow that example, we have to learn that life is not a constant burst of speed in our activities, nor is it action/reaction. It is necessary to know how to take time and learn to spend moments of the day in conversation with God.

2) Choice. We see that Juesus specifically calls each one of the apostles, not in a group. God calls us personally and individually. Since the call is personal, decisions are made from each person’s heart and not based on what others decide. Each of the apostles is different but God chooses them as different as they are. He is not choosing from a catalog. God chooses who he wants because that is His plan, no explanation given. Let yourself be surprised by God.

3)  Work. After praying and choosing, they began their work. Action springs from prayer, not vice versa. Any achievement we may have comes from a close relationship with God. You have been selected by Him. Jesus has already spoken to his Father about you. So before going into action, have your intimate talk with God.

God bless you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. And don’t forget that Heaven is our goal.
