Mark 1, 21-28

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 1, 21-28

Jesus came to Capernaum with his followers,
and on the sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught.
The people were astonished at his teaching,
for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.
In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit;
he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?
Have you come to destroy us?
I know who you are–the Holy One of God!”
Jesus rebuked him and said, “Quiet!  Come out of him!”
The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him.
All were amazed and asked one another,
“What is this?
A new teaching with authority.
He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.”
His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee.

His authority

1.Screaming: The possessed person was screaming. And indeed, when you go through internal storms in life, you lose the capacity to dialogue with others because your inner life is hell. When anger and hatred take hold of you, the only thing that seems to come out naturally is shouting or arguing, just as it does when pride and arrogance reign in your heart. God heals, He soothes you and you stop crying out. Do you have the capacity to speak calmy?

2.He was shaken: This year try to remove from your life, those things that do not give you peace, that rob you of joy, those things that torment you. I propose that you take a sheet of paper and make a list of those things that trouble you. Ask God for light so that you can see, face and solve, together with Him, those things that shake your life.

3.Authority: Jesus’ authority is based on service and, above all, implies a commitment. Jesus’ authority implies bringing about good in others, educating them in faith and liberating them. Here we see the radical difference between an authority that is born from true vocation, the call of God, and an authority that is established based on an ideology, because the latter no longer seeks the good of all but rather seeks to promote proselytism or simply wants to have followers by taking away freedom. What kind of authority do you have?

God bless you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Remember that something good is on the way!
