Mark 8, 22-26

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 8, 22-26

When Jesus and his disciples arrived at Bethsaida,
people brought to him a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him.
He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village.
Putting spittle on his eyes he laid his hands on the man and asked,
“Do you see anything?”
Looking up the man replied, “I see people looking like trees and walking.”
Then he laid hands on the man’s eyes a second time and he saw clearly;
his sight was restored and he could see everything distinctly.
Then he sent him home and said, “Do not even go into the village.”

To see

1) Blind. In today’s gospel, we see a blind person, but he is not blind from birth. We know this, because he says, ‘I see people looking like trees’, which means that at some point in the past he had been able to see. In life you can progressively go blind because you stop seeing the reality around you or you lose the precision to see it just as it is, or even worse, you do not want to see reality.

2) Saliva. God uses signs, sensitive signs that we need to feel and experience. Ask Jesus to cure you of that affective blindness which doesn’t allow you to see reality because you are dominated by affections; or to cure you of that psychological blindness in which you don’t want to see reality because you don’t accept that it is what it is. Ask Jesus to cure you of the spiritual blindness of not seeing God as He is, but rather as you please, taking out and putting in whatever you want.

3) Do not enter. Jesus warns the man not to enter the village in order to avoid conflict. There are times when it isn’t convenient to get into things that end up blinding you, such as gambling or drinking. In short, you know what can blind you, even friendships or emotional relationships that end up destroying you. Today, let’s ask Jesus to heal us, because we were able to see in the past but have been blinded. Look for whatever blinded you so that you will not fall into that again.

Remember that something good is on the way!  God bless you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
