Matthew 5, 13-16

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 5, 13-16

Jesus said to his disciples:
“You are the salt of the earth.
But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?
It is no longer good for anything
but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
You are the light of the world.
A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket;
it is set on a lampstand,
where it gives light to all in the house.
Just so, your light must shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds
and glorify your heavenly Father.”

The salt of the earth

1) Salt. Salt gives food more flavor, but it also makes things last longer and not rot. You and I are called to add flavor to this life every day, so that it may have a pleasant taste and so that it may be lived fully. Furthermore, we must strive not to ‘rot’ anyone’s life. Let’s help to maintain the life of others and help them to keep things tasty. We are called to add flavor to life and not to spoil the lives of others.

2) Light. We have to shed light on this world where there is darkness and lack of clarity. We have to deal with situations and illuminate. Be strong and don’t be afraid to show yourself just as you are because that’s your unique way of illuminating others around you. Don’t leave anyone without light, because in darkness people can fall or get hurt. Your light can help others to be warned of many threats around them.

3) Don’t hide your light.  You have a gift and a God-given endowment. Which is that gift? You have to discover that because it’s very personal and it’s what makes you unique. Perhaps you can ask someone who’s close to you to help you discover that gift that defines you. Sometimes those around you realize what it is before you become aware of it, because it’s easier to look from the outside than to look inwards, to look at oneself. But anyway, don’t hide God’s gift and don’t be afraid to show what helps others to live better. Our aim is to make other people’s life more beautiful.

Remember that something good is on the way!  God bless you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
