Matthew 6, 19-23

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 6, 19-23

Jesus said to his disciples:
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,
where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal.
But store up treasures in heaven,
where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal.
For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.

“The lamp of the body is the eye.
If your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light;
but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be in darkness.
And if the light in you is darkness, how great will the darkness be.”

Your treasure

1. On earth. Consumerism has captivated us. Nowadays we do not just seek to have more, we want novelties, we want the latest cell phone, even if ours is barely a year old. The same happens with cars, computers and so on. You are caught up in this whirlwind of life where you no longer live, instead your life and your time are devoted to things; but careful, money comes and goes, but you cannot recover time. Perhaps money or material things have led you to forget real happiness.

2) Your treasure. You must have a clear idea of the objective of your life and of what you want for your life. When you are not clear about that, you may you crumble, and your heart will be shattered. Seek God and reconsider where your life is going, go on that ‘treasure hunt’ and find what truly makes you happy.

3) Your eye. It’s your look that leads you to understand life. Today, learn to look at your heart and your life, and learn to read your life. Could you say in three words who you are?

God bless you and be with you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Never forget that something good is on the way.
