Matthew 5, 20-26

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 5, 20-26

Jesus said to his disciples:
“I tell you,
unless your righteousness surpasses that
of the scribes and Pharisees,
you will not enter into the Kingdom of heaven.

“You have heard that it was said to your ancestors,
You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment.
But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother
will be liable to judgment,
and whoever says to his brother, Raqa,
will be answerable to the Sanhedrin,
and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ will be liable to fiery Gehenna.
Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar,
and there recall that your brother
has anything against you,
leave your gift there at the altar,
go first and be reconciled with your brother,
and then come and offer your gift.
Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court.
Otherwise your opponent will hand you over to the judge,
and the judge will hand you over to the guard,
and you will be thrown into prison.
Amen, I say to you,
you will not be released until you have paid the last penny.”

Your brother’s worth

  1. Justice. It is an important virtue, both personally and socially speaking. It implies giving to each person what corresponds to them , but above all it is to be fair with what we do. To do justice does not imply complying with laws, since there are laws that threaten the very life of man. But it is to be clear about our positions and convictions. As a parent, it is important to know that you should be involved in shaping and educating your children in being fair and in what it means to comply with rules.
  2. Your brother. Jesus reminds us that each person is unique and irreplaceable, that each person is important. We are all God’s children and that’s why we are all very important. No one grows by trampling on their brothers and sisters, but rather by helping them.
  3. La This is related to the fact that your holiness flourishes alongside others who are your brothers and sisters: speak to God about them, and to them about God; that’s how you’ll grow in love and truth. You can’t be a very devoted person inside the Church, praying constantly, but a gossiper outside of it. Be consistent with what you believe and do. Take care of your prayer, take care of your life, and take care of your relationship with others, with those people who do you good and help you find God.

Never forget that something good is on the way!

God bless you and be with you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
