Matthew 9, 14-15

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 9, 14-15

The disciples of John approached Jesus and said,
“Why do we and the Pharisees fast much,
but your disciples do not fast?”
Jesus answered them, “Can the wedding guests mourn
as long as the bridegroom is with them?
The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them,
and then they will fast.”

Time to fast

1) They approached him. This is how the Gospel begins. It is not only about approaching Jesus, but also about how and why they approach him. If you want to approach Jesus today, come closer to get to know him and discover how beautiful it is to be with him. Do not seek him for a favor or out of convenience, seek Him out of love.

2) Fasting. It means giving up something you have considered necessary. Can you live one day without meat? Can you live one day without a cell phone? It seems not. Today try to discover that you are free and that nothing should bind you, whether material or personal. Do without something today, not only food, but other things, like the cell phone or a TV program. Leave aside anything that does not lead you to God, and learn that life is freedom with responsibility, not just worries. Fasting helps you realize you can lead a simpler life.

3) The bridegroom. Turn to Jesus, only He can fill you with peace and his love. Seek him, because the most beautiful thing in life is to feel loved. You are very valuable to God and He wants to give you eternal love. I know it may be hard for you to understand but ask God during this Lenten season to help you fall more deeply in love with Him.

Never forget that something good is on the way!

God bless you and be with you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
