Matthew 8, 1-4

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 8, 1-4

When Jesus came down from the mountain, great crowds followed him.
And then a leper approached, did him homage, and said,
“Lord, if you wish, you can make me clean.”
He stretched out his hand, touched him, and said,
“I will do it. Be made clean.”
His leprosy was cleansed immediately.
Then Jesus said to him, “See that you tell no one,
but go show yourself to the priest,
and offer the gift that Moses prescribed;
that will be proof for them.”

Leprosy

  1. Isolation. A first characteristic of people with spiritual leprosy is that they isolate themselves and society isolates them. This happens when they discover blemishes in your life; when they learn about your mistakes, many people push you away and distance themselves from you. You’re excluded because of your blemish. The thing is that you’ve even been removed from the church, and we haven’t cured you or cleaned you up; we’ve excluded you, instead. So often, people have even made you feel like they were doing you a favor by paying attention to you. I’m thinking about the people who were unfairly slandered, of those who were condemned and did not have someone to accompany them in their time of condemnation, not so much criminal condemnation, but also social condemnation.
  2. Smell. A second characteristic is the foul odor emitted by a spiritual leper; the smell of pain and envy. There are people who are constantly on the offensive and their comments are always prejudiced or even malicious. There’s a mixture of revenge and pain that cannot be removed so easily, so they take it out on everyone who appears in their path. Envy is also part of this, because envy doesn’t only mean that you don’t have what the other person has, but it goes deeper: “I don’t want that other person to progress in his life, to change for the better with what he has or is, and that I don’t have or are not”.
  3. Bleeding. We all have wounds. The problem is when you get stuck and don’t do anything to heal. Bleeding means that you’re constantly bringing to light everything that was done to you or is being done to you, all the damage you’ve experienced and you’re continually focusing on your wounds and pain rather than on your health and your personal projects. Today let’s ask Jesus to heal our hearts and make us healthy in mind and heart.

Always remember that something good is on the way.
God bless you and be with you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
