Luke 9, 43b- 45

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 9, 43b- 45

While they were all amazed at his every deed,
Jesus said to his disciples,
“Pay attention to what I am telling you.
The Son of Man is to be handed over to men.”
But they did not understand this saying;
its meaning was hidden from them
so that they should not understand it,
and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

Everything is understood in due time

1. They were amazed. We live our religion knowing that we’re united with Jesus and that it’s wonderful to follow him. Knowing Jesus is the most beautiful thing that can happen to you in life. It’s what makes you fall in love with life and with everything around you. That’s when wonder and amazement come in because when you meet Jesus you change your inner self, your heart and soul.

2. Fanaticism. We must be careful here. When a Christian falls into fanaticism he harms the Church and he harms himself. Fanaticism leads a person to set no limits, to become unbearable. He can even fall into a sort of “mysticism” in which he claims that God or Our Lady say things that they don’t and that aren’t true. Be careful with this extreme behaviour. The Pope has already mentioned this when he spoke of people who were more dedicated to reading revelations or visions than to reading the Word of God.

3. Living in Jesus. Finding Jesus helps us to go deeper into our faith. The Church has the last word about visions and revelations, but we must know that they may be true only if they lead us to seek Jesus, and to change our attitude in life, as shown by Our Lady of Fatima or Lourdes. These revelations, among others, take us into the mystery of Jesus who enlightens us through his Word, as well as in the Eucharist. Thus, we come together as brothers and sisters because our life becomes bread, broken and shared with others. We mustn’t always desire to live the extraordinary, but rather the ordinary, tiny, everyday life together. We mustn’t fall into fanaticism; we are lovers of Christ. We are in love with Jesus, and we walk together seeking to be happy discovering true Life.

Remember that something good is on the way!

God bless you, be with you and protect you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
