Matthew 5, 13-16

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Matthew 5, 13-16

Jesus said to his disciples:
“You are the salt of the earth.
But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?
It is no longer good for anything
but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
You are the light of the world.
A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket;
it is set on a lampstand,
where it gives light to all in the house.
Just so, your light must shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds
and glorify your heavenly Father.”

The path of light

1. Salt. We Christians are called to give flavor, zest to life. Whether or not you live your life with relish is up to you, just as it’s up to you to lead an insipid life. I understand that there are things that are unpleasant and that make you bitter but take them as experience. Take your life as it comes and enjoy everything you do. Learn to savor life so that it may give flavor to those around you. It’s all about living life abundantly and joyfully, so that it’s good to be near you and share things with you.

2. Trampled on. When you don’t find joy in your life and bitterness consumes you, everyone backs away and then trample all over you. Don’t be naive; you must accept that when some people see you down and out, they’ll take the opportunity to push you down further. You’re a valuable person with your own story and journey, so don’t let people tread all over you.  It’s a common cycle: bitterness leads to sadness, sadness to apathy, and apathy leads to being downtrodden. Today, choose to be positive, and don’t let go of what brings you joy and a desire to live. That will encourage you to keep going and to learn how to stand up for yourself.

3. Shine. Do things with enthusiasm and passion, because that’s what keeps you moving forward. Shine through what you’re enthusiastic about in life. Remember what God has created you for. You have that spark from God that allows you to keep going and shine, so that you may bring others into the light. I like to say that the electric socket is “helping others” and the power is “prayer”.

Remember that something good is on the way!

God bless you and guard you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
