Matthew 5, 20-26

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 5, 20-26

Jesus said to his disciples:
“I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that
of the scribes and Pharisees,
you will not enter into the Kingdom of heaven.

“You have heard that it was said to your ancestors,
You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment.
But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother
will be liable to judgment,
and whoever says to his brother,
Raqa, will be answerable to the Sanhedrin,
and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ will be liable to fiery Gehenna.
Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar,
and there recall that your brother
has anything against you,
leave your gift there at the altar,
go first and be reconciled with your brother,
and then come and offer your gift.
Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court with him.
Otherwise your opponent will hand you over to the judge,
and the judge will hand you over to the guard,
and you will be thrown into prison.
Amen, I say to you,
you will not be released until you have paid the last penny.”

Your brother is worthy

1. Justice. It’s an important virtue both personally and socially. It involves giving each person their due, but above all, being fair in what we do. Delivering justice does not mean following the law, since there are laws that threaten human life itself (such as drugs and abortion laws). It’s important to be clear that it’s our positions and convictions that lead us to justice As parents, educating children about fairness and rules is crucial; true justice formation starts in the family.

2. Your brother. Jesus reminds us that each brother is unique, and that each one is important to God, because we’re all children of God, even the most sinful. That’s why we’re all extremely important. No one grows by trampling on their brother, but rather by helping them, accompanying them, elevating them, giving and returning them the dignity they deserve. Remember that the search for God refers to holiness.

3. The altar. This signifies your holiness in relation to others, your brothers and sisters. The search for truth lies in speaking to God about others and to others about God. Be consistent with what you believe and what you do;  you can’t be devout in church but a gossip outside. Pray for me, and let’s pray together for life.

Always remember that something good is on the way.

God bless you and be with you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
