Matthew 5,27-32

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 5,27-32

Jesus said to his disciples:
“You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery.
But I say to you,
everyone who looks at a woman with lust
has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
If your right eye causes you to sin,
tear it out and throw it away.
It is better for you to lose one of your members
than to have your whole body thrown into Gehenna.
And if your right hand causes you to sin,
cut it off and throw it away.
It is better for you to lose one of your members
than to have your whole body go into Gehenna.

“It was also said,
Whoever divorces his wife must give her a bill of divorce.
But I say to you,
whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful)
causes her to commit adultery,
and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.”

Cut it off

1. Adultery. The word “adultery” traces its origin back to Latin and means “to defile,” “to corrupt,” or “to alter”. An adulterated relationship is one where someone lives falsely or alters another person’s life. Don’t let anyone corrupt your heart; don’t open it to something false that lacks substance and could collapse at any moment. The problem is when our relationships are unreal, lacking purpose or meaning. This happens when we offer affection without true surrender, which are entirely different things. Don’t be troubled by something essentially false that will inevitably come to an end.

2. Cut it off. When someone or something robs you of your peace, or simply disrupts your life, you need to make cuts. Learning to cut ties with things that don’t help you grow, things that only make you beg, is essential for your personal development. Don’t be a beggar of life, trying to hold onto everything without knowing when to let go. Some cuts are necessary for your well-being. It’s better to cry for a day or a few months than to cry your whole life over someone who only trapped you momentarily.

3. The heart. Jesus sets these guidelines because the dignity of a person is supreme; your dignity in life is absolutely essential. There are even times when divorce is necessary, particularly when a relationship is annihilating a person, precisely because dignity is so crucial. That’s why today’s message is about protecting your heart and learning to value yourself more, seeking to be valued by others.

Never forget that something good is on the way.

God bless you and be with you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
