Following Jesus

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint  Luke 9, 57-62

As Jesus and his disciples were proceeding
on their journey, someone said to him,
“I will follow you wherever you go.”
Jesus answered him,
“Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests,
but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.”
And to another he said, “Follow me.”
But he replied, “Lord, let me go first and bury my father.”
But he answered him, “Let the dead bury their dead.
But you, go and proclaim the Kingdom of God.”
And another said, “I will follow you, Lord,
but first let me say farewell to my family at home.”
Jesus answered him, “No one who sets a hand to the plow
and looks to what was left behind is fit for the Kingdom of God.”

Following Jesus

1. Following Him.  Following the Lord is a calling, not a whim or something we do out of sheer determination. It’s God who chooses and calls you, not the other way around. It’s not about you rushing Him and making your own choice. Sometimes we try to condition God, asking Him to follow our plans.  I invite you to let go and let God be God in your life.

2. Excuses. Excuses are just that: excuses. We often turn our lives into a series of them to avoid taking responsibility. It’s like we don’t want to face what’s expected of us, our mistakes, or simply the need to let go of something to move forward. Excuses only serve to momentarily quieten our conscience. That’s why excuses are just excuses.

3. Don’t look back. You must keep moving forward, because you can’t live in the past. Learn to live life as it is and stop dwelling on “the way things used to be.” It seems we live off memories or phrases like “I should have” or “if only”. Look ahead, because life is sometimes like chess: you always move forward, never backward (except for one piece). But if you look back, you can be captured by your enemies. Look ahead, because God won’t ever abandon you.

Always remember that something good is on the way!

God bless you and be with you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
