Luke 8, 19-21

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 8,19-21

The mother of Jesus and his brothers came to him but were unable to join him because of the crowd. He was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside and they wish to see you.” He said to them in reply, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it.”

Your brothers

1) Your mother and your brothers: at the beginning of this reading you might feel a bit uneasy and maybe you even begin to doubt; you ask yourself: “did Mary have more children?” But this is OK; in fact it’s a good question to ask because it leads you to an investigation. In Jesus’ day blood relations were considered all brothers. They were identified with the term “brother” because at that time the term “cousin” did not exist. That is why the gospel speaks and of “your mother and your brothers”.
2) The will:
To do God’s will , first you need to hear God’s voice inside you. Look at yourself united with God; you need to be familiar with His presence and then you can move forward. When you encounter the living presence of Jesus, He speaks to you and invites you to do great things. When you do His will you are happy and at peace. That is the sign of someone who is doing the will of God: happiness and peace. This is always guided by prayer.
3) Mary: This gospel does not question Mary, on the contrary, it sings her praises. There is no one else like Mary! Today, take time to imagine a moment in the day in the life of Mary: when she was holding her infant son, breastfeeding Him; imagine a moment when she’s putting a spoonful of food into the mouth of little Jesus; or cooking for Saint Joseph… and then sits down, tired from her work of caring for her family. Imagine Mary there …at the foot of the cross.
It’s hard for us to imagine how she lived so connected to Christ, holding God in her hands. When we do God’s will we are also His family.
God bless you in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Remember, heaven is our goal!
