Matthew 9,9-13

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 9,9-13

As Jesus passed by, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post. He said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him. While he was at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat with Jesus and his disciples. The Pharisees saw this and said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” He heard this and said, “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. Go and learn the meaning of the words, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”

Follow me

1) Matthew: he is a person who is questioned by society, and noted as a traitor and a braggart. He makes money collecting taxes and participating in corruption . What a guy Jesus chose !! He is complicated and seen by the public as a sinner, but with Jesus, his life changed completely; there is a noticeable change from before he met Jesus to after. He suffers a crisis in his life: he gives up his job, his home, he changes his ways, and becomes someone new. The truth is, when you get to know Jesus you can transform from a corrupt person to a sinner… Matthew was accustomed to his comfortable way of life and he did not care that others had to suffer as long as he was fine. Jesus gave him a whole different outlook. Think about how you have changed since you’ve known Jesus. What bad habits have you eliminated since finding Jesus?
2) Follow me: Jesus’ call changes everything. His call creates a different light in your life and gives your life meaning. When you accept God’s calling, your life transforms and that leads to transformation in the lives of others as well. When you come to understand that your call is to help other people, the benefit is for everyone. This can be a call to become a priest or a nun, it could be a call to marriage, to be a missionary, or even a lay person. The benefit that comes from saying “yes” to Jesus is for everyone.
3) Sinners: we are all sinners and we fight until our death against the sins that torment us. There will be good days and bad days, but the important thing to remember is to fight… do not let it beat you! If you start justifying your sins then you become corrupt. You make it feel like it is normal when it is not. You are mistaken, and you must recognize the error of your ways. Let God into your life ! God bless you in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit; remember heaven is our goal !
