Mark 2, 1 – 12

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

When Jesus returned to Capernaum after some days, it became known that he was at home.
Many gathered together so that there was no longer room for them, not even around the door, and he preached the word to them.
They came bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men.
Unable to get near Jesus because of the crowd, they opened up the roof above him. After they had broken through, they let down the mat on which the paralytic was lying.
When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Child, your sins are forgiven.”
Now some of the scribes were sitting there asking themselves,
Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming. Who but God alone can forgive sins?
Jesus immediately knew in his mind what they were thinking to themselves, so he said, “Why are you thinking such things in your hearts?
Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, pick up your mat and walk’?
But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins on earth”–
he said to the paralytic, “I say to you, rise, pick up your mat, and go home.”
He rose, picked up his mat at once, and went away in the sight of everyone. They were all astounded and glorified God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this.”

There are people who lead you to Jesus

1) Spiritual cripple: Today you might be that spiritual cripple who does not feel deeply spiritual. You’re not interested in any of God’s things, and not even moved by anything in your own life. You are just there… letting time pass by, but not making any decisions. You aren’t enthusiastic about things you could experience or face; you don’t have any goals to achieve, nor do you work hard for anything. A paralyzed person who watches his life go by …

2) The crowd: There are people and things that become obstacles to meeting God. The amount of things you have to do in the day or in the week might not allow you to reach Jesus. It’s that tight schedule you have that doesn’t allow you to sit down for two minutes, close your eyes, and talk to God. That multitude of worries that do not let you see yourself with God because you are always too busy; preoccupied with problems and things in your head that you have to solve.

3) The path of forgiveness: The men help him. There are people who can help you find Jesus, so you can reach Him. It is not a crowd here, there are not many, there are only a few. Be aware of the good people around you, and aware of the people who love you … cling to those people who pick you up and take you, because they want what is good for you. Accept them even when it hurts; when they correct you or say things to your face. They do this because they love you. Swallow your pride, which dies three days after you are buried. Cheer up! God wants you more alive than ever! Do not let yourself get spiritually paralyzed !
God bless You in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Remember heaven is our goal !
