Matthew 5, 20-26

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 5, 20-26

For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. ‘You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, “You shall not murder”; and “whoever murders shall be liable to judgement.” But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgement; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, “You fool”, you will be liable to the hell of fire. So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are on the way to court with him, or your accuser may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.

Your life must be righteous.

1) Your righteousness: You and I must have a different righteousness than that of the scribes and Pharisees. That is to say, we should not act out of anger or get angry when there is something that hurts or bothers us. And if you act on the spot, it is very possible that you think you are being just and fair… but it is there that you act with passions and feelings, and intelligence is left out. That’s why you may well regret it later, or realize that you’ve overdone it. Learn to act calmly, and you will be fair if you do justice from the point of view of reason and logic. When you get angry and overheated, you would surely kill the person who did something to you if you had a sword in your hand. But it is possible that you will also harm the person who is close to you, because when you get angry, you get really angry ! In the act you will make all the excuses you want, but, when you calm down, you will realize what you did; you will realize that you left a trail of people wounded, hurt and slaughtered. Well, instead of using your sword, you often hurt others by using your tongue and the words that you say.

2) Patience: As the song “Calm Down” would say, let time act. When faced with a situation that makes you crazy, the first thing you have to do is calm down. Don’t act in the moment; learn to look at the overall situation. Of course you have to do justice, but from the point of objectivity and truth. All extremes are bad; don’t act and do harm in that instant, nor act two years later when the culprits are no longer there. Learn how to discover that moment; the time when it is appropriate to act and say things.

3) Reconciliation: This is a difficult subject. Getting irritated can even lead to illness. What I suggest is to develop your attitude towards life. Don’t let anyone kill your dreams or make you be someone you are not. Don’t let them bring out the worst in you. Seek reconciliation; make peace and try to resume the relationship. If not, you will have a bunch of enemies in a short time. Take advantage of the time you have. Find the opportunity to discuss problems. Be more diplomatic and look for a solution to things in order to maintain the spirit of dialogue. Of course, if nothing is achieved and the situation becomes a toxic relationship, or a vicious circle of only fights, then the best thing to do is not to declare war, but rather, to pray and take the necessary distance from the other person. Remember that we only have one life, and if you start fighting with that person you might spend all your strength there. Then, when the battle is over (if it ends), your life will be over too. That’s when you will understand that it was better to move on. Take care of your prayer life; take care of your life, and take care of your relationship with those people who do you good. Respect those who are there to help you encounter Him (Christ).
God-bless you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Please pray for me and remember heaven is our goal !
