An Appointment with the Bible (I)

by Carlos L. Rodriguez Zía
The Bible

Advent begins today, it’s the time to prepare for Christmas. And, here at Catholic Digital Missionaries we think it is a good reason to have an “appointment” with the Bible.

When celebrating Baptisms, in addition to the baptismal font, the Paschal Candle is placed at the foot of the altar, and at certain point, the godfather and godmother come forward to light the candle they are holding. Both candles represent the light of Christ, the Word of God that illuminates our journey, as happened to the Jewish people as they wandered through the desert on their way to the land promised by the Father. It was the light of a star that guided the Three Wise Men from the East – also known as the Magi – to the place where The Child was born.

May the light of the Word of God illuminate and guide this time of preparation until Christmas Eve and Christmas. And may this handful of selected verses help and accompany us in this renewed journey to meet the Son of God.

Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw how good the light was. God then separated the light from the darkness.

Genesis 1, 3-4.

For Wisdom is mobile beyond all motion, and she penetrates and pervades all things by reason of her purity. For she is an aura of the might of God and a pure effusion of the glory of the Almighty; therefore nought that is sullied enters into her. For she is the refulgence of eternal light, the spotless mirror of the power of God, the image of his goodness.

The Book of Wisdom 7, 24´-26.

For with you is the fountain of life, and in your light we see light.

Psalms 36, 10.

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; Upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone.

Isaiah 9, 1.

The recesses of the darkness he discloses, and brings the gloom forth to the light.

Job 12, 22.

For God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to bring to light the knowledge of the glory of God on the face of (Jesus) Christ.

2 Corinthians 4,6.

Just as I received authority from my Father. And to him I will give the morning star.

Revelation 2, 28.
