Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 2, 1-11
There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee,
and the mother of Jesus was there.
Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding.
When the wine ran short,
the mother of Jesus said to him,
“They have no wine.”
And Jesus said to her,
“Woman, how does your concern affect me?
My hour has not yet come.”
His mother said to the servers,
“Do whatever he tells you.”
Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings,
each holding twenty to thirty gallons.
Jesus told them,
“Fill the jars with water.”
So they filled them to the brim.
Then he told them,
“Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.”
So they took it.
And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine,
without knowing where it came from
(although the servers who had drawn the water knew),
the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him,
“Everyone serves good wine first,
and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one;
but you have kept the good wine until now.”
Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs at Cana in Galilee
and so revealed his glory,
and his disciples began to believe in him.
The wedding at Cana: a lesson for everyone
1) Celebration: Life is a celebration because this implies meeting, getting together, having joyful conversations, sharing. This is the meaning we must give life: we are called upon to get together and share, to give our life to others so that we may build together. We must take a close look at our family and our friends and be attentive to what is happening to those around us. Do we really take the time to share and talk?
2) They have no wine: Difficulties always appear in life; they are part of it, but they are also opportunities to see one’s resourcefulness and God’s work. What do we do when a difficulty comes our way? Do we despair, do we get carried away, do we stand still and stare at it? Or do we begin to look for ways to help overcome that difficulty? Necessity leads to despair, but rest assured, it also leads to being able to open our eyes, to think of solutions. Let’s not despair, let’s ask for help.
3) Mary: As a good mother, she is attentive to the needs of those around her. She sees the situation from the outside and knows who to turn to. That is what we must learn, to be alert and thoughtful, to look at the problem from the outside, with objectivity, and then ask for help and advice from someone who is not involved, to be able to find solutions.
Get into the celebration of life with those close to you and ask Jesus to give you a hand. Tell Jesus about the needs of others and ask him to help you.
