Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 10, 38-42
Jesus entered a village
where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him.
She had a sister named Mary
who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak.
Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said,
“Lord, do you not care
that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving?
Tell her to help me.”
The Lord said to her in reply,
“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.
There is need of only one thing.
Mary has chosen the better part
and it will not be taken from her.”
She has chosen the better part
1. She welcomed him. I think hospitality is something that we have to work on in our lives. We are sometimes quite indifferent. We must learn to share and make the person we’re with feel good and valuable. We should stop focusing on ourselves and learn from Martha to open up to others; to welcome others so that when they leave they might be happier after spending time with us.
2. Very busy. The figure of Martha is very interesting. She welcomed Jesus, but she wasn’t mindful of His words. This frequently happens to us: we declare we are Christians, but we don’t listen to Christ. Being part of the Church institutionally is different from developing a personal relationship with Jesus. One of the things we find most difficult is listening. True listening requires openness and learning from others. You may think you have Jesus in your life, but without meaningful dialogue with Him, you miss the core of faith.
3. Mary. In Mary we see that person who allows herself to be amazed. She’s someone who is open and willing to learn, showing receptiveness and a readiness to understand. We need to work on this. Instead of wanting to solve or control everything ourselves, even God himself, we must learn to listen to him, to grasp and understand what He says, and after listening to Him, we must go out to share what we’ve learned. Today, God teaches you that it’s not doing a lot that makes you eternal, but rather listening to him and, after this time of intimacy, manifesting what you have embraced.
Always remember that something good is on the way!
God bless you and protect you, in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit
