Matthew 5,1-12

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 5,1-12

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.
Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

Being blessed

1) Triumphant Church. This refers to the Saints, but not the saint cards you carry in your wallet or their statues in a church. Today, we celebrate the anonymous Saints, people who have shown their love of God their entire lives. They have not been canonized by the Pope, but are in Heaven for their great work on Earth. Today, we celebrate all those who through their daily lives have given us a bit of Jesus.

2) Rejoice. Today, the gospel repeats the word blessed because the person who finds Jesus is changed forever. We can rejoice in Jesus, with Jesus, and for Jesus.

3) Heaven: Saint John Bosco used to tell his kids, “In heaven we will have a great party.” We must learn that we begin to live happiness here, but we reach its fullness only in Heaven. Today, God invites you to know that the key to life is to be happy. With Jesus, everything is easier. Let’s make the best of life.

May God Almighty bless you in the name of the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. And remember, Heaven is our goal.
