Mark 2, 23-28

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 2, 23-28

As Jesus was passing through a field of grain on the sabbath,
his disciples began to make a path while picking the heads of grain.
At this the Pharisees said to him,
“Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?”
He said to them,
“Have you never read what David did
when he was in need and he and his companions were hungry?
How he went into the house of God when Abiathar was high priest
and ate the bread of offering that only the priests could lawfully eat,
and shared it with his companions?”
Then he said to them,
“The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath.
That is why the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath.”

Rituals and routines

1) To go through. Jesus shows us a way to experience difficult or confusing situations in life. You must accept them and face them. You have to go through your life analyzing what is happening at each step. Of course, there is the issue of need which appears. There are always needs in our lives, the point is to know how to solve them.

2) Pharisaical attitude. That is an attitude that you or I can have, when we look at rites and rituals and pass judgment on who is doing good and who is doing wrong. Something like that happened to me some time ago when a lady wrote to me. She was very angry, and she said I was disrespectful since I had accidentally dropped a particle of the Eucharist, but she never saw my nasal congestion and dizziness. There are times when focusing on ritualism we forget what is human. Please look at the whole picture.

3) Man. Remember that we all have dignity, and that you are worth a lot. Don’t let your dreams be destroyed and don’t be suffocated by structures that hinder you from fulfilling God’s work in you. Don’t fear and remember that God’s work is also manifested in you.

Never forget that something good is on the way!  God bless you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
