Matthew 5, 43-48

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 5, 43-48

Jesus said to his disciples:
“You have heard that it was said,
You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.
But I say to you, love your enemies,
and pray for those who persecute you,
that you may be children of your heavenly Father,
for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good,
and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust.
For if you love those who love you, what recompense will you have?
Do not the tax collectors do the same?
And if you greet your brothers and sisters only,
what is unusual about that?
Do not the pagans do the same?
So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

Be perfect

1) “Love your enemies”. This love implies recognizing that you are not going to get along with everyone and that some people may want to complicate your life. Just you may also want to cause problems for someone else. Well, you must be mature in this respect and assess who is who in your life. There are people who do not contribute to your life. Well, accept that fact and then take the second step, which is to love them. What does this mean? It refers to supernatural love, grace given by God, which implies praying, forgiving, and forgetting. Difficult? Very difficult, that’s why I remind you that it is a process.

2) The extraordinary. Learn to integrate everything and everyone in your life. Please, do not make the mistake of leaving aside things that have happened in your life or pretend they never happened. No! Accept whatever happened and learn from that. You must see how to move forward and how to lead your life with that experience in mind.

3) Perfection. To be perfect in the biblical sense does not mean the same as it does for many today. It does not refer to the obsessive-compulsive perfectionist that many of us carry within us, but rather to the search for excellence in things, which is not the same thing. The perfectionist seeks an ideal, whatever the cost, without measuring whether or not he or she will be able to achieve it. On the other hand, excellence is to reach the highest level, to the best of your possibilities.

Don’t forget that something good is on the way!  God bless you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
