Matthew 17, 9a 10- 13

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 17, 9a 10- 13

As they were coming down from the mountain,
the disciples asked Jesus,
“Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
He said in reply, “Elijah will indeed come and restore all things;
but I tell you that Elijah has already come,
and they did not recognize him but did to him whatever they pleased.
So also will the Son of Man suffer at their hands.”
Then the disciples understood
that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.

Elijah has already come

1. They did to him whatever they pleased. When someone wants to influence somebody’s life, two things may happen: accept that there’s a limit or break that limit. This happens to you, to me and to everyone. Therefore, if you don’t set limits for yourself, life will set limits for you. Because people always like and seek to break or defy limits. However, there are consequences to everything you do. I always say that sin is like a credit card, you enjoy spending but then the interest is painful; sooner or later you have to pay the consequences.

2. Elijah . He is the figure of God’s messenger, a prophet. Perhaps many Elijahs have come to your life, but you may have not paid attention to them because you were closed in on yourself, on your whims. When you shut yourself off, everything may end up collapsing. So, learn to listen to the wise people around you. Remember that there’s always someone who’ll try to show you the horizon, it’s just a matter of whether you want to accept it or not.

3. Suffer. You know that we have to struggle in life and face the blows that life deals us. We all suffer for different reasons, but things become clear over time and eventually you will understand the meaning of everything you have gone through and suffered. Everything has a meaning but when you do not find the meaning of what you’ve faced and lived, you may be suffering for the sake of suffering or simply because you are not willing to build your life on the experience you’ve gained. Accept the limits of life and stop seeking to break them. Today, God’s proposal is that you live your daily struggle knowing that He’s aways with you, offering new opportunities.

Remember that something good is on the way!

God bless you, be with you and protect you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
