Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Luke 5, 27- 32
Jesus saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the customs post.
He said to him, “Follow me.”
And leaving everything behind, he got up and followed him.
Then Levi gave a great banquet for him in his house,
and a large crowd of tax collectors
and others were at table with them.
The Pharisees and their scribes complained to his disciples, saying,
“Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”
Jesus said to them in reply,
“Those who are healthy do not need a physician, but the sick do.
I have not come to call the righteous to repentance but sinners.”
From sinner to follower
1. A tax collector. A public traitor. He’s someone who’s not accepted by society. No matter how much good a person who has been labeled and stigmatized does, it will not help him. If people already consider him a bad person, no matter how much good he does, he will continue to be a bad person. It’s sad that we keep on labeling people. 2. The calling. Jesus sees him and calls him. That’s what the calling is about: it’s Jesus who calls whom He wants, when and the way He wants. Jesus’s gaze leads Matthew to give up everything and change radically. His gaze turns a public sinner into an evangelizer. That’s why the key to all this is that God chooses you and calls you. 3. Conversion. God chooses you and calls you, simply because He desires to, because for Him each person is worthy, and He gives each of us opportunities time and again. The only thing that matters to Him is to save us all. He is merciful and He also accompanies us. He shows us that He can change any heart and He asks us to open our heart to him. He doesn’t label people, He gives opportunities. Give yourself a chance and also learn to give others an opportunity. For those who are great sinners today, may be great evangelizers tomorrow. Don’t forget that something good is on the way! God bless you and protect you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
