Mark 8, 11-13

Signs of Life

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 8, 11-13

The Pharisees came forward and began to argue with Jesus,
seeking from him a sign from heaven to test him.
He sighed from the depth of his spirit and said,
“Why does this generation seek a sign?
Amen, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.”
Then he left them, got into the boat again,
and went off to the other shore.

Signs of Life

1. Pharisees. Even now, there are people who act like modern-day Pharisees by using faith and religion in a kind of screening process. They act like “faith customs agents,” deciding who belongs and who doesn’t. They argue about everything and, in doing so, end up crushing people who have a simple faith or are just starting to grow. It’s truly unfortunate to encounter such attitudes in our churches, groups, or organizations—people who, rather than welcoming others to Jesus, see themselves as gatekeepers, blocking the ways God is working in people’s lives.

2. They argued. Take a moment today to reflect: when you argue, is it to learn and grow, or just to provoke and criticize? Everyone knows people who seem to oppose everything, not to help, but to create conflict just for the sake of it. Instead of offering guidance or support, they just want to win an argument. Pay attention to how Jesus responds— He doesn’t get dragged into it; He doesn’t let Himself get pulled into pointless disputes.

3. The other shore. This is the calling we share: to reach out to others instead of staying stuck in arguments over matters like whether Communion should be received standing or kneeling. While such issues may be important to some, they aren’t the main focus. Our mission is to share the Gospel, because while we waste time debating minor details, there are people searching for meaning in their lives. We should seek out our brothers and sisters to offer help and hope, not just to argue for the sake of argument.

Remember that something good is on the way!

God bless you and keep you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
